Advancing the Fight Against Childhood Leukemia at Mount Sinai

At the Wagenblast Lab, part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we are dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of childhood leukemia, the most common cancer affecting children. Our work is rooted in a fundamental commitment to better understanding the disease at its earliest stages and developing therapies that are not only effective but also tailored to each child’s unique biology. With the support of donors like you, we can continue pushing the boundaries of science and medicine to bring hope to children and families worldwide.

Our research focuses on two major challenges in pediatric leukemia: uncovering its origins and overcoming therapy resistance. Evidence suggests that many cases of childhood leukemia may even begin before birth. Using advanced genome editing, we aim to understand how early mutations lead to disease and develop interventions to stop it before symptoms appear. At the same time, we are modeling genetic changes that cause relapse and resistance to treatment, employing tools like CRISPR/Cas9 and patient samples to identify weaknesses in leukemia cells. This work has the potential to transform treatment, especially for aggressive and resistant cases.

The impact of our research extends far beyond the lab, with a strong focus on translational science to bridge the gap between discovery and patient care. Through close collaborations with clinicians at Mount Sinai, we are actively working to bring our findings into the clinic. By integrating our cutting-edge research with real-world patient needs, we aim to develop therapies that directly benefit children battling leukemia. This collaborative approach ensures that our discoveries are transformed into life-saving treatments accessible to children in need.

Your support is critical to our mission. By contributing to the Wagenblast Lab at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, you are helping to fuel groundbreaking research, acquire advanced technologies, and train the next generation of scientists and clinicians dedicated to pediatric cancer. Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of countless children and their families.

Join us in this fight against childhood leukemia. With your help, we can move closer to a world where every child has the opportunity to live a healthy, cancer-free life.
