People with disabilities are at a heightened risk of social isolation, and AbleGamers knows that video games can be the perfect gateway to community participation, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable shared experiences. That’s why it’s crucial to make sure these experiences are developed with accessibility as a priority and inclusion as the goal.
For over a decade and a half, AbleGamers has been pushing the inclusive efforts of the industry forward by training and consulting studios while connecting them directly with players who can share their personal experiences.
AbleGamers charity has been assisting more than 70 million gamers with disabilities in the gaming community as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization through our 5 pillars.
Peer Counseling-
AbleGamers Peer Counselors craft individualized strategies for people with disabilities to develop solutions to accessibility challenges, combat their social isolation, and join a community of millions of players worldwide. Our Peer Counseling team consists of players with disabilities and occupational professionals who work together to find the best solutions to enable play. Through these one-on-one sessions, people with disabilities can connect with other like-minded players who can share their knowledge and experience firsthand.
Our peer counselors take as much time as needed to thoroughly discuss current accessibility hurdles, provide resources and suggestions to people with disabilities to play and find community.
Community and Inclusion-
The Community and Inclusion Team focuses its outreach efforts on supporting, improving, and cultivating opportunities that forge lifelong relationships. Our Community and Inclusion Specialists work directly with the industry and support community initiatives resulting in a more inclusive gaming community, creating safe spaces where players with disabilities have a voice.
User Research-
Our User Research works to investigate, document and share the current options for players in games as well as document where barriers still exist so that the future of gaming can be where everyone finds a game that they love. With this pillar we strive to anticipate the next big areas, such as augmented and virtual reality so that these new technologies can be accessible faster than previous generations of gaming.
Engineering Research-
The AbleGamers Engineering Research team works hand in hand with our Peer Counselors to create solutions where none exist. Our Peer Counselors take as much time as needed to thoroughly discuss current accessibility hurdles, provide resources and suggestions to people with disabilities to play and find community and our Engineers take the requests and work to make something new. AbleGamers has a state-of-the-art makers space at the Center for Inclusive Play. 3D printers and laser C&C cutters help our Engineers create solutions that support our mission.
Professional Development-
Professional Development guides industry philosophies to promote an inclusive and accessible future. We can build a new controller to help a player with a physical disability. Still, to support other disabilities, those solutions are done in the software. So this pillar also develops materials and provides education to the gaming industry on assistive technology and equipment for players with disabilities.
